The humble gutter performs an important task by collecting all of the rainwater that hits your roof and transporting it safely away from the building. This protects your foundations, your doors and windows and can even prevent flooding, so it is important to keep your guttering in good condition to be sure that it is functioning efficiently.
Your guttering should be cleaned regularly to remove any leaves and other debris that may cause a blockage. There are a few different pieces of equipment available that allow you to flush out your guttering from the safety of the ground, using extendable pipes and high pressure water jets.
If you intend to use the traditional approach of rubber gloves and a bucket of water, take extra care when climbing a ladder. Make sure you have the correct ladder for the job and always ask a friend or relative to come along in case you need another pair of hands. You should never attempt to climb onto the top two or three steps of a ladder, or reach out to either side. If in doubt, call on a professional.
If you spot early signs of leaks in your guttering then you may be able to apply a patch up job using caulk, which is available from DIY shops. However, if your guttering is badly dented or has developed holes, then you will need to consider replacement of some or all of the pipes.
